First Day of Class and Food Pictures

Now that I purchased an internet card for my computer (at last!!) I can access the web from my homestay. Life just got a whole lot easier.

Classes began today and I love my class! I'm in the smallest one; there are only ten of us. The level seems perfect, and the teacher is really nice. We spent so much time getting our computers set up with internet that we haven't done much exploring around the city today but we have our welcome dinner tonight so between the dinner and homework, our evening is plenty busy.

Alright, as promised, food pictures!! The food here is just as sumptuous and delightful as I've always heard and dreamed. NOM!!!!

More Exploring

August 28, 2011
Today was an insanely busy day! Lily and I finally got a chance to see the Trevi Fountain – and wow!!! Gushing water fueled by a still-intact aqueduct, gorgeous Baroque statues … the perfect picture spot! We also checked out Trajan’s column – somehow bigger in real life than in my Art History textbook or on lecture slides. We sat for a while on the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna to soak up some sun and read up on what Rick Steves had to say about everything in Rome. Our “Ancient Rome” walk was a nice follow-up to yesterday’s “Baroque Walk” and took us to the Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, some ruins and more.

After staring at it every day, tonight we got a chance to try to Chinese/Japanese/Thai place across the street from our house!! They have quite an extensive menu at insanely low prices! It's literally so close that, from our table, I could see into my bedroom window. Creepy.... It was funny that everyone else there was speaking Italian while in so many restaurants there are tons of foreigners. But, of course, why would Italians go out and order gnocchi or pasta when they could cook it perfectly well at home? But Pan-Asian cuisine? Ok, they’re in. I found this also to be true in Paris: my favorite restaurant was actually a little Thai place next to the Louvre and every time I went the group I was with would be the sole group not speaking French.

I’ve certainly been racking up the Roman experiences -- flavorful pastas and pizzas, boiling hot afternoons, ancient ruins amid bustling city life, getting used to ordering and buying things in Italian, waiters asking me out (alright, that was only today lol), waiting who-knows-how-long for the buses, and having small cups of coffee with no milk (I only sometimes concede to this but it is certainly the norm for Italians). Can’t wait to keep exploring and to start classes tomorrow morning!

Roma!!

After countless hours of planning, document-organizing, stress, travel, and preparation, my time in Rome has finally begun!! So far, everything has been simply perfect -- I was indeed placed with a host family and I even got my roommate request, a good friend of mine on the program. The woman we're living with speaks pretty much no English so it's been tons of fun to immerse ourselves in the language in our home environment. Also, as she has two grown daughters, we're staying in actual bedrooms with really fun decorations, not some dorm or apartment that we have to make an effort to spruce up. This woman is simply an incredible cook and has been wonderfully kind about cooking vegetarian for my sake. She has promised to make vegetarian lasagne at some point (this simply does not exist elsewhere in Rome)!! I promise food pictures will be forthcoming in the near future.

We haven't had tons of time to explore the city as yet since we've just been getting used to the time difference and getting to know our host signora. My friend Lily, myself, and our signora spent last night watching the American TV show "Private Practice" in Italian which was insanely fun, thrillingly dramatic, and excellent Italian practice. Private Italian Practice, pardon the pun.

The erratic bus schedule caused us a significant delay on our way to academic orientation today so we have to attend the later one this afternoon. I suppose it was a learning experience and at least it allowed me time to update this blog!

Yesterday I bought my own little "telefonino," or cell phone, and I really like it, particularly because it doubles as a radio so I can rock out in my room.

I can already attest to the excellence of Italian pasta, coffee, salad, gelato, bruschetta, pizza, and yogurt -- who knows what's next!?!?

Austria Catch-Up and Pictures

Quickie Re-Cap, August 21, 2011

Salzburg and Vienna were lovely! There were lots of beautiful buildings in Vienna and Salzburg was adorable! We visited the house Mozart grew up in as well as the house where he lived for the rest of his life. A definite highlight of our time in Salzburg was the Sound of Music tour, which took us around sights where the movie was filmed, including the houses that were used for front and back (with lake!) of the von Trapp mansion. We learned a lot about the real story (which is, in fact, quite close to that of the movie) and saw some beautiful landscapes and exciting sights (like the gazebo from “16 Going on 17!!!!). In Vienna, we finally got to try “sacher torte,” a dry but rich chocolate cake that my mom was dying to taste.
I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but we found a really beautiful park in Innsbruck that we all thoroughly enjoyed.
